The pigeon is missing his right leg. The right side of his breast shows the line of an old wound. He has been on permanent display since June 1921, mounted by Smithsonian taxidermist Nelson R. Wood in the first months after his death on 13 June 1919 at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. His name was Cher Ami — French for “dear friend,” masculine — and he is, by the standards of any reasonable accounting, the most famous individual non-mammalian combatant in the documented military history of the United States.
The basic facts of the Cher Ami pigeon’s military service are settled. He was a male homing pigeon (Columba livia domestica), born in the spring of 1918 in Norfolk, England, one of approximately 600 English-bred messenger pigeons donated by the British Pigeon Service to the U.S. Army Signal Corps Pigeon Service during the buildup to American operations on the Western Front. He arrived in France in the summer of 1918. On 1 July 1918 he was assigned, along with 59 other pigeons, to Mobile Loft No. 11, managed by Corporal (later Sergeant) Ernest P. Kockler of Chicago, supporting the U.S. First Army. The loft supported the 77th Infantry Division through the Aisne-Marne fighting in July and August, relocated to Rampont, France on 21 September 1918 for the opening of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, and on 4 October 1918 was the place to which a single bird, badly wounded, returned at approximately 4:15 in the afternoon carrying a message that helped save the lives of 194 American soldiers trapped behind German lines in a wooded ravine in northeastern France. The whole improbable narrative sits inside the broader archive of animal heroes who served in formal military and security roles across the 20th century — a category whose membership turns out, on inspection, to be considerably more decorated than most people assume, and considerably stranger.
A Pigeon in a Glass Case at the Smithsonian
Before walking through the operational sequence of 4 October 1918, it is worth pausing on the museum exhibit, because the museum exhibit is the part of the story that most contemporary American visitors encounter first.
The Smithsonian’s catalog entry for the Cher Ami pigeon exhibit — preserved on the National Museum of American History’s online collection record — describes the object as a mounted pigeon, missing the right leg, with the message capsule attached to the remnant of the right leg, on a wooden perch under glass. The accompanying exhibit text describes the events of 4 October 1918, names the Lost Battalion, names Major Charles W. Whittlesey, and notes the bird’s decorations. The display has remained substantively unchanged for sixty-five years and counting. The exhibit description was, until 2021, the only place in the museum’s documentation where Cher Ami was consistently identified as male. Everywhere else in the early 20th-century records — the U.S. Army Signal Corps Pigeon Service A.E.F. document listing the returning pigeons, the period newspaper accounts, the contemporaneous children’s books — Cher Ami was referred to as a hen, a female. The Smithsonian had labeled him male on the basis of physical examination by Nelson R. Wood at the time of mounting in 1919-1921. The Army had labeled him female on the basis of his Signal Corps Pigeon Service paperwork. For a hundred years, the institutional record contradicted itself, and nobody could resolve the contradiction without either re-examining the bird (which the museum was reluctant to do) or running a kind of analysis that did not exist in 1921.
The contradiction was finally resolved in 2021, in honor of the centennial of Cher Ami’s first appearance on Smithsonian display, by means of a DNA test conducted by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in partnership with the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Center. The test will be covered in detail below. The result confirmed the Smithsonian’s century-long labeling. Cher Ami was male.
The case in which he stands is positioned, in the “Price of Freedom: Americans at War” exhibit, near the case containing the preserved remains of Sergeant Stubby — the Boston Terrier mix who served with the 102nd Infantry Regiment of the 26th Yankee Division through seventeen named engagements and four major offensives, including the Meuse-Argonne offensive that produced the events of 4 October 1918. The placement is not coincidental. The museum curators decided, at some point, that the two most famous non-human combatants of the First World War should be displayed within visual range of one another. They have been, since the current exhibit configuration was installed, an effective pairing. The contemporary museum visitor encounters them in the same five-minute interval. The Smithsonian staff who work the gallery report that visitor commentary on the pairing tends to be both extensive and unsolicited.
The Lost Battalion in the Argonne Forest
The story of how a homing pigeon born in Norfolk ended up flying twenty-five miles through German fire on 4 October 1918 begins with a planning failure in the largest American military operation up to that point in history.
The Meuse-Argonne Offensive opened on 26 September 1918, with 1.2 million American troops committed to a sustained drive through the Argonne Forest and the Meuse River valley toward the German rail junction at Sedan. The 77th Infantry Division — nicknamed the “Metropolitans” because its draftees were largely drawn from New York City — was assigned to advance through the central Argonne, an exceptionally difficult sector of broken terrain, dense undergrowth, and prepared German defenses. The advance was slow and costly. By 2 October 1918 the division had penetrated several kilometers into the forest but had taken substantial casualties and had begun to lose tactical cohesion with the units on its flanks.
On the morning of 2 October, Major Charles W. Whittlesey — a thirty-four-year-old New York lawyer commanding the 1st Battalion of the 308th Infantry Regiment — received orders to continue the advance regardless of the situation on the flanks. The orders were explicit. Whittlesey was to take Hill 198 and the road parallel to it. He was to do this whether the units on his left and right were keeping pace. Whittlesey did not particularly want to obey these orders, but he was a regular Army officer in a wartime division, and the orders had been clear. He took his battalion forward.
Whittlesey’s force — combined with the 2nd Battalion of the 308th under Captain George G. McMurtry, two companies of the 306th Machine Gun Battalion, and (joining them the next day) Company K of the 307th Infantry Regiment under Captain Nelson M. Holderman — advanced through the forest faster than the flanking units could match. By the evening of 2 October the composite force, approximately 554 men, had reached Charlevaux Ravine, a wooded gully in the Argonne several hundred meters ahead of any other American position. The Germans, recognizing what had happened, swung around behind them. The flanks of the American advance were not where they were supposed to be. The Charlevaux Ravine was suddenly, unrecoverably, behind German lines.
Whittlesey had brought eight pigeons with him into the forest. The pigeons were carried by Private Omer Richards of New York, a member of the 308th Infantry Regiment whose pre-war profession had been pigeon fancier and who had been assigned to the battalion specifically for his expertise. The pigeons were the only communications link with division headquarters that did not depend on runners. The runners — four were sent over the course of the first two days — did not return. The German encirclement had become tight enough that no human messenger could get through it. The pigeons were the only option left.
For five days the surrounded battalion held its position in the ravine. The German forces around them mounted repeated assaults with machine guns, mortars, and infantry attacks. The Americans returned fire with what ammunition they had. Casualties accumulated. Water ran low. Food ran out. The wounded — and there were a great many wounded — could not be evacuated. On the second day, in a tactical development that has been the subject of contention ever since, American artillery began to fall on Whittlesey’s position. The 308th’s own supporting artillery, working from coordinates that were several hundred meters out of date and assuming the battalion to be elsewhere, began ranging shells onto what was now the only sheltering terrain Whittlesey’s men had. The shelling was sustained. The American artillery did not know it was American. The American infantry, on the receiving end, knew exactly what was happening.
The survivors hated the “Lost Battalion” name from the moment the press attached it. They were not lost. They were exactly where they had been ordered to go. The orders were the problem. The flanks were the problem. The intelligence picture at division headquarters was the problem. They preferred the term “surrounded battalion.” The “Lost Battalion” name persisted anyway, because the alliterative version made better newspaper copy than the accurate one — a pattern documented across the broader archive of historical events whose public framing diverges from the institutional record.
October 4, 1918: The Last Bird in the Loft
By the afternoon of 4 October 1918, Whittlesey had sent seven of his eight pigeons. The first carried a message reading “Many wounded. We cannot evacuate.” It was shot down by German rifle fire as it lifted out of the ravine. Subsequent pigeons were stymied — released into a forest canopy thick with German fire, some shot down, some lost, some unable to find their way past the encirclement. By 3:00 PM on 4 October, Whittlesey had one pigeon left. The pigeon’s name was Cher Ami. Private Omer Richards carried him.
The artillery barrage from the American 308th’s own supporting batteries had now been falling on the position for several hours. Whittlesey wrote out his last message in pencil, the standard Pigeon Service procedure, on the standard onion-skin paper used for the small leg-mounted message capsules. The text — preserved in the National Archives, image 595541 — read:
We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For Heaven’s sake, stop it.
The 276.4 was the coordinate reference for the German military map quadrant the battalion had reached — a fact that mattered, because the message was therefore not only a request to stop the barrage but a precise locator for the surrounded battalion’s position. Whittlesey had not previously sent the location coordinates in the earlier pigeon messages. The 276.4 was new information. If the message arrived, the artillery would stop and the rescue forces would know exactly where to come.
Richards rolled the message into the standard aluminum capsule and clipped the capsule to Cher Ami’s right leg. Captain John Carney, the U.S. Army Signal Corps officer who had been Cher Ami’s trainer during the bird’s spring and summer training cycles in England and France, had reportedly noted Cher Ami’s performance in earlier missions and had recommended him as one of the loft’s most reliable returnees. Richards released the bird at approximately 3:00 PM. The pigeon lifted out of the ravine, climbed above the German lines, and began the flight back to Mobile Loft No. 11 at Rampont, twenty-five miles to the south-southwest.
The Germans, who had now learned over the preceding two days to watch for pigeon releases from the American position, opened fire as Cher Ami cleared the canopy.
“We Are Along the Road Parallel to 276.4”
A homing pigeon’s flight behavior under fire is, by the standards of all known military communications systems, biologically remarkable. The bird climbs to an altitude above the immediate small-arms threat — typically 100 to 200 meters above the terrain — establishes a homing vector toward its loft, and flies at speeds approaching 50 miles per hour. The flight is sustained, not pulsed; the pigeon does not stop to assess danger; the pigeon does not reroute around hostile fire. The pigeon flies directly toward home. This is the entire operational point of the species’ deployment in military communications: the pigeon’s behavior is so deterministic that the bird can be treated, by its handlers, as a piece of self-propelled hardware that will not deviate from the assigned task as long as the task is biologically completable.
The Cher Ami pigeon’s task on the afternoon of 4 October was biologically completable, but only just. The German rifle fire that opened up as the Cher Ami pigeon cleared the canopy was sustained. He was hit. A bullet or shell fragment — the surviving forensic evidence cannot determine which — struck him in the lower body, severing his right leg, cutting across his breast, and leaving the message capsule hanging by the tendons of the partially-severed leg. Some sources record that the bird also lost one eye to the same fire. The Doughboy Foundation’s contemporary biological account, citing the original Pigeon Service medical records, lists his injuries as: chest wound, severed right leg, and blinding of one eye. The injuries would, in any normal pigeon at any normal moment, have terminated the flight.
The flight did not terminate. The Cher Ami pigeon continued, wounded, on the homing vector toward Rampont. Whether he flew the full twenty-five miles continuously or paused at some point en route is not documented in the surviving records. What is documented is that he arrived at Mobile Loft No. 11 at approximately 4:15 PM on 4 October 1918, one hour and fifteen minutes after release. The Smithsonian’s contemporary fact sheet on Cher Ami specifies the flight duration. The popular version, which circulated through American newspapers in late 1918 and early 1919, claimed twenty-five minutes — implying a sustained ground speed of approximately 60 miles per hour over the entire route, which is at the upper boundary of what a healthy homing pigeon can sustain over a quarter-hour and well beyond what a wounded one can sustain over a longer flight. The official Smithsonian record, drawing on the original Mobile Loft No. 11 daybook, gives the 75-minute duration. The original log entry is preserved.
The bird, when he arrived at the loft, was barely alive. The message capsule was still attached, hanging from the tendons of what remained of the right leg. The loft personnel removed the capsule. The message was relayed by telephone to division headquarters within approximately fifteen minutes. By the time the message reached the artillery battalion responsible for the friendly fire, the barrage had already been suspended on independent reconsideration of the situation by the artillery’s own staff. The Smithsonian record is explicit on this point. Cher Ami’s message did not, in itself, stop the barrage. The barrage had already been stopped. What Cher Ami’s message did do was provide division headquarters with the exact coordinates of the Lost Battalion, in a form precise enough to direct the eventual relief operations of 7-8 October — when American forces broke through the German encirclement and reached the survivors.
Of the 554 men of Whittlesey’s composite battalion, approximately 197 were killed in action, approximately 150 were missing or taken prisoner, and 194 walked out alive.
The Flight That Was 25 Miles Long
The contemporary popular version of the Cher Ami pigeon story emphasizes the twenty-five-minute flight time, the bird’s heroic dash through enemy fire, and the moment of arrival at the loft as the dramatic peak of the story. The contemporary historical version, drawing on the Smithsonian’s archival reconstruction, emphasizes a more textured set of facts: the flight was longer than legend, the bird arrived later than the legend says, the artillery had already stopped before the message was decoded, and the message’s real operational value was the coordinate fix rather than the barrage cessation.
Both versions are true in their own ways. The legend has the merit of compression — it captures, in a single dramatic image, the operational logic of military pigeon use. The history has the merit of accuracy — it captures what actually happened. The history is the version that the Smithsonian’s curatorial staff has been quietly preferring since the centennial of the bird’s display in 2021, but the legend is the version that has persisted in American popular memory for a century and that continues to persist in 2026. The reconciliation between the two is the kind of curatorial problem that the National Museum of American History has been navigating since the museum first accessioned the bird in 1919.
What is not in dispute, in either version, is the bird’s specific wounds, the bird’s completion of the flight despite those wounds, and the bird’s contribution to a relief operation that brought 194 of 554 men out alive. The relief was completed on the night of 7-8 October 1918. Whittlesey, McMurtry, and Holderman were all awarded the Medal of Honor for their conduct during the encirclement. The 308th Infantry Regiment received a Distinguished Unit Citation. The relief operation entered the American military’s institutional memory as one of the defining episodes of the Meuse-Argonne, in the same general categorical space as other improbable historical accomplishments preserved in the broader catalog of audacious operations.
The bird went to the field hospital. Army medics — who had previously treated dogs, horses, and the occasional mule but had limited experience with pigeon surgery — amputated what remained of the right leg, treated the chest wound, and began the long and uncertain process of trying to keep the bird alive. They were not optimistic. The chest wound was serious. The leg amputation, while not life-threatening in itself, had cost the bird significant blood. The first forty-eight hours were touch-and-go. By the end of the first week, against medical expectations, Cher Ami was eating again.
The Wooden Leg, the Croix de Guerre, and the Reception at Hoboken
The bird was transferred from the field hospital to the Pigeon Service convalescent loft at Rampont. He recovered through October and November 1918. The Armistice was signed on 11 November. The Pigeon Service began its demobilization. The Cher Ami pigeon was selected, along with thirty-two other “distinguished” pigeons, ten captured German pigeons, and 132 selected breeders, for return to the United States as part of the Signal Corps’ plan to establish a permanent Army pigeon program on American soil.
The French government, in the meantime, had decided that the bird deserved a formal decoration. The Croix de Guerre with palm — the French military decoration for bravery in combat, awarded with palm device to indicate citation at the army level — was awarded to Cher Ami in a ceremony in early 1919. The palm was an extra distinction beyond the basic Croix de Guerre. The U.S. Army Signal Corps also awarded him the Distinguished Service Cross, though the awarding has been disputed in subsequent decades (some sources record the DSC was awarded, others record it as informal recognition). The Croix de Guerre is on the historical record without ambiguity. The medal, in 1919 in a French field hospital, was pinned to a small leather harness that Cher Ami wore on subsequent ceremonial appearances.
On 16 April 1919, Cher Ami departed France for the United States aboard the U.S. Army transport Ohioan, accompanying approximately 1,600 returning American troops and the other distinguished pigeons of the Signal Corps repatriation cohort. He was transported, by the Signal Corps’ arrangement, in a custom-built carrying case on the upper deck. The voyage took approximately ten days. The Ohioan arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey, in late April 1919 to a press reception that was — by the standards of contemporary American military returns — substantially out of proportion to the visible cargo. The press knew Cher Ami was on the ship. The press had been informed by the Signal Corps’ public affairs apparatus. The press was waiting at the pier.
The bird was photographed extensively on arrival. He was transferred to Camp Alfred Vail in New Jersey — later renamed Fort Monmouth — which had been designated as the new headquarters of the U.S. Army Signal Corps Pigeon Service, the institutional home where the Pigeon Service would operate continuously for the next thirty-eight years until the program’s discontinuation in 1957. Cher Ami spent his remaining time at Fort Monmouth in semi-retirement, recovering from his chest wound and serving as a living mascot for the new Pigeon Service headquarters. The chest wound, however, never fully healed. He grew gradually weaker through May and into early June 1919.
Cher Ami died on 13 June 1919. He was approximately fourteen months old. The cause of death was recorded as complications of his combat wounds.
How the U.S. Army Signal Corps Got Into the Pigeon Business
To understand why the death of a single bird in New Jersey on 13 June 1919 produced an institutional response that included a Smithsonian taxidermy donation, a permanent museum display, and a Racing Pigeon Hall of Fame induction twelve years later, you have to understand the operational status of homing pigeons in the U.S. military as of the end of the First World War.
The U.S. Army Signal Corps Pigeon Service was, in 1918, the most reliable forward-area communications system the American Expeditionary Force had. The point bears emphasizing. Radio was unreliable, jammable, and vulnerable to interception. Telephone wire was easily cut by artillery fire and could not be laid through contested terrain. Runners were slow and frequently killed. Mounted couriers were similarly vulnerable and could not operate in trench-system terrain. The pigeon, by comparison, was fast (50+ mph), unjammable, immune to gas attacks (pigeons fly above the gas concentration), and capable of crossing terrain that no human could traverse. The bird’s only operational vulnerabilities were small-arms fire during the flight (which limited the practical range to the line-of-sight limit of the firing position) and the weather (rain and fog impaired homing accuracy).
The British Pigeon Service had pioneered the operational use of homing pigeons in modern warfare during the Boer War and the First World War’s early years. The French and Belgian armies had extensive pigeon programs by 1916. The U.S. Army, entering the war later, had relied initially on borrowed British and French pigeons before establishing its own Signal Corps Pigeon Service in late 1917. By the end of the war, 600 American pigeons had been deployed forward to the AEF, organized into 23 mobile lofts supporting infantry divisions across the front. The 32 pigeons that received formal AEF distinction at the end of the war — including Cher Ami and Mocker (a red check pied cock, AU-17-4084, who homed from the vicinity of Beaumont on 12 September 1918 with his right eye destroyed by a shell splinter and a critical message identifying the location of German heavy artillery batteries) — represented the elite of the program. Mocker would live until 14 June 1937, making him the last of the WWI hero pigeons to die. Mocker was posthumously awarded the Animals in War & Peace Medal of Bravery in March 2023, four years after Cher Ami received the same recognition.
The Signal Corps’ plan, after the Armistice, was to consolidate the AEF pigeon program into a permanent peacetime institution. Camp Alfred Vail — later Fort Monmouth — was selected as the headquarters. The thirty-two distinguished returning pigeons, ten captured German pigeons (intended for breeding analysis), and 132 selected breeders arrived in Hoboken in April 1919 aboard the Ohioan and were transported to Camp Alfred Vail to begin the new program. The Signal Corps Pigeon Service operated continuously at Fort Monmouth from 1919 until its formal discontinuation in 1957, a thirty-eight-year run that outlasted World War II, the Korean War, and the early Cold War. At the program’s peak in World War II, the U.S. Army Pigeon Service operated approximately 54,000 birds and 3,150 enlisted pigeoneers across multiple theaters. The program produced its second great hero pigeon, G.I. Joe, who flew twenty miles in twenty minutes in October 1943 to recall an Allied air strike on a recently-captured Italian village and save approximately 1,000 Allied and Italian civilians. G.I. Joe was awarded the Dickin Medal. He outlived Cher Ami by forty-two years.
The 1957 closure of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service ended the formal American military use of homing pigeons for communications. The institutional reasoning, in 1957, was that contemporary radio communications had become sufficiently reliable and jamming-resistant that the operational requirement for pigeons had become obsolete. The decision was, in retrospect, premature in ways that the contemporary maritime robotics and communications environment is beginning to acknowledge.
What DNA Testing Revealed in 2021
The DNA test conducted in 2021 by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Center, in honor of the centennial of Cher Ami’s first appearance on Smithsonian display in June 1921, was a small operation with disproportionate institutional consequences.
The test was structured around a basic feature of avian sex chromosome biology. In mammals — humans, dogs, cats, baboons, dolphins — sex is determined by the X/Y chromosome system. Females are XX, males XY. In birds, the system is inverted. Females have two different sex chromosomes, designated Z and W. Males have two copies of Z. The presence or absence of a W chromosome is therefore diagnostic for sex in pigeons (and in all other bird species): if a bird has W-specific DNA sequences, it is female; if it has only Z-specific sequences, it is male.
The Smithsonian’s research team, led by molecular biologist James McInerney, extracted a small tissue sample from the stump of the Cher Ami pigeon’s right leg — the leg that had been severed by German fire over the Argonne in October 1918 and that had been retained in the taxidermy mount since 1921. The sample was sequenced. The team ran two independent analyses for Z-specific sequences and two independent analyses for W-specific sequences. In replicated analyses, the Cher Ami pigeon’s DNA produced Z-specific sequences and no W-specific sequences. Cher Ami was conclusively male.
The result confirmed the Smithsonian’s century-long labeling and overturned the U.S. Army Signal Corps’ century-long labeling. The Pigeon Service A.E.F. document listing the returning pigeons in 1919 had recorded Cher Ami as female. The Pigeon Service had been wrong. The Smithsonian had been right. The Army updated its institutional records. The Smithsonian updated its public-facing accession description. The accumulated century of “she” pronouns in popular accounts began, in 2021, to be progressively replaced with “he” pronouns in subsequent retellings. The contemporary February 2026 Military.com retrospective on Cher Ami uses male pronouns throughout, in line with the post-2021 historical record. Earlier retellings — and a substantial percentage of contemporary popular accounts still using older source material — continue to use female pronouns. The transition will take time. The DNA, however, is settled.
The DNA result is interesting for reasons that extend beyond the bird’s biography. The Pigeon Service’s apparent preference for female pigeons in WWI service — reflected in the assumption that Cher Ami was female because that was the operationally common configuration — was based on the empirical observation that hens, in the early 20th-century pigeon-fancier literature, were thought to be marginally faster, more reliable, and easier to handle than cocks. The biological consensus has since revised this view. Both sexes perform comparably in homing tasks under the conditions that military pigeon service imposed. The Cher Ami pigeon’s case is not an outlier; it is the corrected version of what the population of military pigeons actually looked like. The broader research framework on animal cognition and behavior has, over the past several decades, repeatedly produced these kinds of corrections to early-20th-century assumptions about working animals’ capacities and traits.
Major Charles Whittlesey and the Aftermath
The Medal of Honor citation for Major Charles White Whittlesey was issued on 6 December 1918 by General Pershing. The citation read in part: “Although cut off for five days from the remainder of his division, Major Whittlesey maintained his position, which he had reached under orders received for an advance, and held his command, consisting originally of forty-six officers and men of the 308th Infantry and of Company K of the 307th Infantry, together in the face of superior numbers of the enemy during the five days. Major Whittlesey and his command were thus cut off, and no rations or other supplies reached them, in spite of determined efforts which were made by their comrades. On the fifth day a verbal demand for surrender was received from the Germans. Major Whittlesey responded with an indignant refusal.”
The “indignant refusal” became a piece of American military folklore. The popular version of the story attached a specific two-word reply to Whittlesey — “Go to hell” — that Whittlesey himself denied having uttered. The denial was treated by the press as a modest officer’s reluctance to claim credit for a memorable line. Whittlesey, for his part, was emphatic that the denial was accurate; he had simply not responded to the German message at all.
The post-war years for Whittlesey were difficult in a way that the post-war institutional record had not, in 1918, been prepared to accommodate. He returned to his New York law practice. He was flooded with speaking invitations, parade participations, and ceremonial appearances. He served as a pallbearer for the Unknown Soldier at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier dedication ceremony at Arlington in November 1921. The ceremonies were extensive. The expectations of him, as a Medal of Honor recipient and as the public face of the Lost Battalion, were sustained.
Whittlesey was, by the contemporary accounts of his friends and family, suffering from what would later be classified as post-traumatic stress disorder. The term was not in clinical use in 1921.
