Deniable war has a logistics problem.

Somebody has to actually fly the crates in — and that somebody cannot be an air force, cannot be traceable, and cannot be expensive. For eighty years the answer has been the ghost plane: an old airframe on a rented flag, permitted by a compliant ramp, crewed by men working far from any labor court, carrying cargo described on paper as something else, paid for through channels that leave no wire. It is one of the most consequential industries on earth and it has no headquarters, no founder, and no name.

Nyala is where the trail ends: three aircraft destroyed there in 2025, each assembled from parts that were already on the shelf. So the course spends twenty-three lectures visiting the shelves. An airline the CIA owned outright, and a Rhodesian sanctions-buster who worked out what a friendly registry was worth. Desert boneyards selling dead airliners back into service. Flags of convenience and the end-user certificate — a notarized page with a market rate. The Sharjah operators who inherited the Soviet air force when it went on sale in 1991. A Sahara corridor older than the pickup trucks now fighting over it, a gold seam paying the customer’s bills, Gulf free zones and hawala desks settling accounts without a wire moving, and an American contractor industry built for two wars and released fully capitalized into a world that still had plenty.

Then the machinery that notices: plane-spotters with cheap receivers, satellite imagery on a journalist’s budget, location data leaking out of the advertising business.

Investigative reporting in lecture form — serials, filings, tonnages, denials on the record, gaps named as gaps. Extremely funny in places, completely silent in others.
