Across 24 narrative lectures (1814 to 2026), you’ll tour communes, planned towns, spiritual cities, festival societies, and startup-state experiments-from New Harmony and Oneida to Auroville, Burning Man, Prospera, and NEOM. Each story is told like a forensic walkthrough: the founding promise, the rulebook, the buildings, the labor system, the money, the plumbing, the conflicts, the PR, and the moment the outside world shows up with courts, permits, neighbors, investors, or police. This course treats utopia as operations: governance + incentives + material constraints + enforcement. 

You’ll see how charters, bylaws, deeds, meeting minutes, and lawsuits become characters, and why scale is the silent antagonist that breaks trust, coordination, and ideology quietly-then all at once. We separate what was claimed, what was written, what was practiced, and what was later mythologized. You’ll also learn the ethical audit: consent, power asymmetries, and the true price of exit when someone tries to leave. The tone is brisk, deadpan, and funny without being cruel: we puncture founder myth and glossy branding, but we never make victims the punchline. Along the way, you’ll see why aesthetics are policy, why rituals act like enforcement, and why ‘paper is destiny’ isn’t a metaphor when deeds, permits, and court orders decide what gets to exist.
